Aspen at a Glance
Aspen sits in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley, where Aspen Mountain rises straight above a historic silver-mining town. The lifts, dining, galleries, and nightlife are all within walking distance, and three more mountains, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass, lie a short drive away.
Aspen Mountain covers 828 acres of skiable terrain and is known for steep, advanced runs rather than gentle beginner slopes. Newer skiers usually start at nearby Buttermilk, while strong skiers test themselves on the bumps and ridges above the Silver Queen Gondola.
About Aspen
Aspen spans 3 unique ski areas, each with its own rhythm, terrain, and appeal. With more than 5,700 acres, over 330 trails, and nearly 50 lifts across the region, there’s plenty of space for skiers and snowboarders to find their groove. Expert riders can dive into steep chutes and glades, while newer skiers will appreciate wide-open learning zones and beginner-friendly groomers. Thoughtfully designed infrastructure across the resort’s 3 mountains – Aspen/Ajax Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk – ensures smooth access and minimal wait times, even during peak season. Aspen is also strongly affiliated with nearby Snowmass Resort.
Accommodations near each mountain reflect their distinct character. Some guests opt for ski-in/ski-out residences with direct access and mountain views, while others prefer a private home close to town’s dining and boutiques. Lodging options range from sleek condos to expansive multi-bedroom retreats, making it easy to match your setup to your group’s needs. Whether you’re chasing deep powder at Highlands or enjoying the family-friendly pace at Buttermilk, Aspen lets you build a mountain experience as laid-back or ambitious as you like, all anchored by smart design and premium amenities.

A brief history
Aspen’s roots stretch back to the 1880s, when it was founded during Colorado’s Silver Boom. The town quickly grew into a thriving mining center, attracting thousands of prospectors in search of fortune. At its peak, Aspen was one of the largest silver-producing districts in the United States. However, the boom didn’t last. When the U.S. government demonetized silver in 1893, Aspen’s economy collapsed. The once-bustling mining town entered a period of steep decline, becoming a quiet and largely forgotten mountain settlement.
Aspen’s second chapter began in the mid-20th century when Walter Paepcke, a Chicago industrialist, saw the potential to transform the sleepy town into a cultural and recreational hub. In 1949, the Aspen Skiing Company was formed, and the first ski lift opened on Aspen Mountain. That same year, the town hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, marking its arrival as a legitimate ski destination. Aspen’s cultural identity expanded alongside its ski reputation, with institutions like the Aspen Institute, the Aspen Music Festival and School, and the Aspen Center for Physics drawing visitors from around the world. By the 1970s, it had become a magnet for writers, artists, and celebrities, ushering in the mix of outdoor lifestyle and cultural sophistication that defines Aspen today.

Things to do in Aspen
Aspen offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and seasonal events across its winter and summer seasons. During the winter months, skiing and snowboarding dominate the agenda. With 3 distinct mountains (Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk), as well as nearby Snowmass, visitors can choose from expert terrain, family-friendly slopes, or top-tier freestyle parks. Winter activities extend beyond skiing to include snowmobiling tours, dog sledding, and ice skating. Après-ski is equally important here, with a mix of casual hangouts and high-end lounges offering a place to relax after a day on the mountain.
When the snow melts, Aspen transforms into a playground for warm-weather adventure. The area’s extensive trail network supports hiking, trail running, and mountain biking across varied terrain. Rivers and lakes provide opportunities for fly fishing, rafting, and paddleboarding. In town, you’ll find live music, farmers markets, and events like the Aspen Ideas Festival and Jazz Aspen. The range of Aspen vacation rentals, including Aspen holiday rentals and Aspen vacation home rentals, means you can choose accommodations that fit your activity preferences, whether that’s walking distance to summer concerts or a quiet retreat near the trails. No matter the season, there’s always something to explore in Aspen Snowmass.

The Heartbeat of Aspen
Aspen Mountain
Towering over downtown Aspen, Aspen Mountain – also known as Ajax – delivers steep runs, bumps, and glades without a single beginner trail. It’s a no-nonsense mountain that rewards experienced skiers with direct gondola access from the town center. With 3,267 vertical feet and 76 trails, its compact yet challenging terrain requires solid skills and quick reflexes. This is not the place to learn the basics, but for confident intermediates and experts, it’s one of the most rewarding mountains in Colorado.
Staying near Aspen Mountain offers the rare luxury of true ski-to-town convenience. Many high-end condos and penthouses are within walking distance of the gondola, boutique shops, and après-ski lounges. Whether you’re looking to maximize time on the mountain or enjoy Aspen’s vibrant dining and nightlife without ever stepping into a car, lodging near Ajax puts it all at your doorstep. For those who want to blend top-tier skiing with seamless urban access, Aspen Mountain is the ideal base.
Aspen Highlands
Known for its dramatic vertical drops and advanced terrain, Aspen Highlands is a favorite for locals and seasoned skiers. The terrain here is steep and challenging, making it less appealing for beginners but perfect for those looking to push their limits. The highlight of the mountain is Highland Bowl, a hike-to-ski area with over 1,500 vertical feet of expert-only runs. Reaching the summit requires a 30–45-minute uphill trek, but the reward is fresh powder and wide-open terrain with some of the best views in the region.
Beyond Highland Bowl, Aspen Highlands offers well-groomed intermediate runs and a quieter overall atmosphere compared to other Aspen mountains. The base area includes practical amenities like gear rentals, lockers, and restaurants, and is far less crowded than Aspen Mountain or Snowmass. Vacation rentals near Aspen Highlands tend to be more secluded, appealing to guests who value direct access to advanced skiing with fewer distractions. Whether you’re here for a serious day on the slopes or a quiet mountain experience, Aspen Highlands delivers an uncompromising ski day without unnecessary fuss.

Buttermilk plays host to the annual Winter X Games
Buttermilk
Buttermilk has a reputation as Aspen’s most approachable mountain, and for good reason. With wide groomers and gentle learning zones, it’s a favorite among beginners, families, and anyone seeking a relaxed pace. The mountain is also home to one of the top-rated ski schools in the region, with programs designed for kids, first-timers, and those looking to fine-tune their skills.
But Buttermilk isn’t just for beginners. It’s also a global stage for freestyle skiing, thanks to its terrain parks and annual hosting of the Winter X Games. Its three distinct zones, Main Buttermilk, Tiehack, and West Buttermilk, offer a variety of runs and views, making it easy to progress without feeling overwhelmed. Rentals nearby tend to emphasize convenience: open-plan homes with gear storage, spacious kitchens, and easy access to lifts and shuttles.
