Underwater Wonderland
Dive into a kaleidoscope of color at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, where vibrant coral gardens and schools of tropical fish await. Whether you’re an experienced snorkeler or trying it for the first time, the clear and shallow waters are perfect for exploring Diani’s underwater world. Keep an eye out for dolphins, sea turtles, and, if you’re lucky, a passing whale shark.
The park is best explored on a traditional dhow boat, which adds a touch of local culture to your expereince. Additionally, take a break from exploring and enjoy a delicious, Swahili seafood lunch on Wasini Island before you head back into the water.
Come And Meet The Colobuses
Diani is also home to the Colobus Conservation Centre, which is dedicated to protecting the endangered Angolan colobus monkey. A visit here offers an opportunity to observe these delightful creatures up close, as well as learning about local conservation efforts.
Guided forest walks take you through indigenous coastal woodland, where, in addition to the colobus monkeys, you’ll have the chance to see also observe vervet monkeys, bush babies, and an array of birdlife. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy Diani’s lush, lesser-known wildlife.
A Rainforest By The Sea
The Shimba Hills National Reserve offers a refreshing contrast to Diani’s beach life. The reserve is home to Kenya’s largest population of endangered sable antelope, as well as elephants, giraffes, and an array of bird species.
A particular highlight is the guided hike to Sheldrick Falls, a hidden waterfall within the reserve’s dense forest, where you can take a refreshing dip beneath the water. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a morning of wildlife spotting. The reserve’s vantage points also offer amazing views of the Indian Ocean.
Journeys Back In Time
Step back into the past with a visit to the Kongo Mosque, the oldest mosque on Kenya’s southern coast and a cherished symbol of Diani’s Arab influence. Built in the 14th-century, the mosque is steeped in Swahili history, and its simple coral stone structure provides a connection to the ocean.
Today, the mosque continues to serve as a place of worship, while the beach it overlooks is lined with ancient baobab trees, offering a tranquil setting to relax and enjoy an afternoon picnic.
