Volcanoes National Park

Overview

World-famous for its gorilla trekking, Volcanoes National Park provides unparalleled opportunities to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The experience begins with skilled trackers venturing ahead into the dense rainforest to locate the gorilla families. Once they signal their location, expert guides lead guests through the lush terrain to meet the trackers and the gorillas. Along the way, guests learn about gorilla behavior and the extensive conservation efforts dedicated to their protection. The park also offers other remarkable experiences, such as tracking rare golden monkeys, and is home to some of the most luxurious camps and lodges to be found anywhere in Rwanda.

Volcanoes National Park covers approximately 160km², and is part of the Virunga Massif, a chain of dormant volcanoes that also spans neighboring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is named after the five volcanoes that live within its boundaries: Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. These majestic peaks are cloaked in lush rainforest and bamboo, which not only provides a rich habitat for a vast range of wildlife, but also creates a dramatic backdrop.
