Vail Ski School

Vail Ski & Snowboard School is one of the largest ski school operations in North America, with instruction programmes that cover every age, ability, and learning style. The size is both an asset and a logistical challenge: the quality ceiling is high, but the volume means availability in peak weeks disappears fast. Book lessons at least two to three weeks in advance for December and February dates. For January and March, a week’s notice is usually sufficient outside of holiday weekends.

Lessons are run out of two main bases: the Ski & Snowboard School at Golden Peak (the primary location, with the best beginner terrain nearby) and the Lionshead Adult Ski and Snowboard Center (better located for guests staying in Lionshead). The school also operates from the Vail Village Children’s Ski School centre in the Village.

Child’s Group Ski Lessons

Group ski lessons for children at Vail run in age-specific cohorts, the school groups kids by age and ability rather than mixing widely, which makes a real difference to the pace and enjoyment. The Golden Peak Learning Area is specifically designed for children’s first experiences on snow: gentle, well-maintained, away from faster skiers. For children aged 3-14, half-day and full-day group options are available. Full-day lessons include lunch, which simplifies the logistics for parents who want their own ski day.

Child’s Group Snowboarding Lessons

Children’s group snowboard lessons follow the same age-cohort approach as ski lessons, with instructors who specialise in teaching younger riders. The school recommends children be at least 7 years old for snowboard lessons, younger children tend to find the mechanics easier to manage on two skis rather than one board, though this varies by child. Equipment (including helmets) is included in the lesson price.

Child’s Private Lessons

One instructor, one child (or one family group of children). Private lessons are the fastest route to progress for children and the most flexible in terms of scheduling and terrain choices. The instructor can adapt entirely to the child’s pace, slower and more supportive for hesitant beginners, faster and more challenging for confident ones. Worth the extra cost for younger children who may struggle in a group environment, or for children who already ski and want focused improvement rather than group instruction.

DEVO Program

Vail Ski School proudly offers the DEVO Program, a specially designed developmental ski and snowboard program for children. The DEVO Program is a holistic approach to ski and snowboard education, focusing on the all-around development of young skiers and snowboarders.

Each session includes a carefully curated blend of fun, learning, and skill enhancement. A small group of children participate in each program, ensuring that each child receives personalized attention and guidance from highly skilled instructors. These professionals employ innovative teaching methods and activities to create a positive and engaging learning environment.

The duration of the DEVO Program is tailored to meet the needs of children, ensuring they are challenged yet not overwhelmed. The program covers a range of skills, from basic techniques to more advanced maneuvers, all while fostering a love for winter sports and the outdoors.

One of the unique features of the DEVO Program is its emphasis on building confidence and social skills. Children learn to collaborate, communicate, and support each other, gaining valuable life skills that will serve them well beyond the slopes.

All-Terrain Program

DEVO (short for Development) is Vail’s multi-day progressive programme for children who want to develop seriously rather than take one-off lessons. Small groups (typically four to six children), consistent instruction across the programme, and a curriculum that builds specific skills in sequence rather than reviewing basics each day. This is the right choice for families visiting for a week who want their children to make genuine progress. The programme has a waitlist in peak season; book as early as possible.

Adult Group Ski Lessons

For children who can already ski but want to push into more challenging terrain. The All-Terrain Development Program covers moguls, powder, steeps, and variable conditions, the kind of skiing that separates confident intermediates from genuinely capable mountain skiers. Instructors work on technique in context (on the terrain itself) rather than in isolation, which accelerates progress. Limited group sizes ensure attention is genuine.

Adult Group Snowboard Lessons

Group lessons for adults at Vail are ability-grouped from true beginner through to advanced, with instructors who assess each group at the start and adjust the day’s plan accordingly. The Vail instructors are generally more experienced than average ski school staff elsewhere, the resort pays well and attracts career instructors who have been teaching the same mountain for years. That local knowledge matters: they know which runs are best for what you’re trying to learn, which conditions suit which technique, and where to be at what time of day.

Adult Private Lessons

Same structure as adult ski groups, grouped by ability. First-timers should know that the first day on a snowboard is one of the more physically demanding experiences in recreational sport, falling is part of the process, and good wrist guards (available to rent) are genuinely worth wearing. By day two, the improvement curve is steep and most beginners are skiing runs they couldn’t have imagined on day one. Vail’s instructors are patient with the process.

Focused Learning

The fastest and most enjoyable way to improve as an adult skier or snowboarder. A private instructor can observe your skiing continuously rather than dividing attention across a group, identify the specific technical habit that’s holding you back, and build the day’s terrain choices around your development needs. For guests who ski once or twice a year and plateau at the same level every time, a single private lesson often produces more improvement than five days of independent skiing. Book at least two weeks ahead for peak season dates.

Her Turn

A more targeted version of the private lesson concept, designed for adult skiers who know specifically what they want to work on. You identify the goal at the outset, mastering moguls, improving powder technique, building confidence on steeps, and the instructor builds the session around that objective rather than a general improvement plan. Useful for intermediate-to-advanced skiers who don’t need a baseline assessment but want expert guidance on a specific challenge.

Adaptive Lessons

Women-only clinics taught by female instructors. The programme exists because research (and a lot of instructor experience) has shown that many women progress faster in same-gender groups, partly social, partly the fact that female instructors often approach biomechanics and body positioning in ways that are more useful for women’s physiology. Her Turn sessions run over multiple days and combine on-snow instruction with social time. A genuinely well-run programme that goes beyond the “ladies’ ski day” concept.

Vail’s adaptive ski programme is one of the strongest in the country and genuinely committed to accessibility rather than just nominally offering it. Instructors are specially trained for a range of physical, cognitive, and sensory disabilities, and the equipment available, including sit-skis, outriggers, and bi-ski systems, is comprehensive. The programme is integrated into the main ski school operation, so adaptive skiers ski the same mountain as everyone else. Book well in advance; adaptive spots are limited and in demand.

Living in Colorado has kept me close to the ski season and the small details that shape a good mountain trip. I work closely with clients travelling to Vail, Breckenridge, Telluride, and Big Sky, using my own time on the slopes to think through pace, location, and the right fit for each group. Travel has always been part of my life outside work too, from road trips with my husband and dog, to time spent in both Botswana and Kenya, plus journeys across Europe with friends and family. I bring that same practical, curious approach to every itinerary I design.
